About me

Hi, I’m Emily! I’m a recently self-taught front-end developer with 7 years of experience in product management and design. I’ve worked at companies big and small, on new and existing products, but the one constant in my career has been that I have felt most engaged with my work when solving technical problems with great teams. In my first role as a developer I have had the privilege of doing just that, while being able to draw upon the strong foundation in product and design that I have built in previous roles.

My background in product and design, degree from a top engineering school, years of learning from and working alongside world-class engineers, and experience with all parts of the development process from ideation through launch and iteration make me a unique candidate for front-end roles. What I lack in years of formal coding experience I make up for in a strong product sense, an eye for (and lots of experience with) product design, an instinct for making technical tradeoff decisions thoughtfully and holistically, expertise in rapid testing and user research, and an agility and adaptability that is imperative in a fast-paced tech environment. I love what I do and bring enthusiasm for both being great at it and making work a great place to be. Don't hesitate to reach out to me! I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Quizzical Trivia Game

Quizzical is a trivia game that I created as the solo project for the 'React Basics' module of the Scrimba Front End Developer Career Path. This app makes use of the Open Trivia DB API to generate sets of 5 multiple choice trivia questions. Design and functionality requirements are from Scrimba.

Next steps: Add more controls for how many questions, of which type, in which category, consider trying to make it a game you could play live with friends, or integrate an AI API to generate a broader variety of more relevant questions with answer explanations.

FamilyWorks Text-to-go

I partnered with FamilyWorks, a Seattle-based food bank and family resource center, to build a text system that would allow the members of their community to customize and order boxes of groceries for out-of-hours pick up. We began this project during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when the need for safe access to community resources was high and hard to come by. I worked closely with the Food Bank Manager to design and build the system using a variety of low-code tools. This program has increased the reach of FamilyWorks to 100+ regular households participating and is now offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Next steps: Upcoming improvements include inventory integration for more granular customizations and delivery via integration with DoorDash, among other ideas.

screenshot representing Link Swap Extension project

Link Swap Extension

I originally built this extension to satisfy a request my husband had for a fix to his own workflow - to swap a small part of the Salesforce links he had to use for work that directed him to Salesforce's new UI, with a string that would then make the link direct him to the old UI, which he preferred. I recently updated the app to be a more multi-purpose tool where the user can input any string they want to find, and any string they want to replace it with, and the extension will find any instances of links that contain the original string and swap it for the new one. I plan on publishing it to the Chrome Store soon!

Next steps: Add more granular stop/start control and make it possible for the user to select which type of element they want to replace text within, in addition to just links, and publish it.

Digital Business Card

This digital business card was created as a step in the 'React Basics' module of the Scrimba Front End Developer Career Path. The goal was to build a basic React app to solidify our understanding of components and how to use them. This was my first React project. Design and functionality requirements are from Scrimba.

Next steps: Look for ways to make this useful 🤷‍♀️

Cook List

Cook List is a recipe search and saving app that I created as the solo project for the 'Working with APIs' module of the Scrimba Front End Developer Career Path. We were tasked with building a movie watchlist app and I used Edamam's Recipe Search API to make it something I would be likely to use myself and keep improving on. This was my first self-directed API project (rather than following a spec).

Next steps: Store saved recipes in a more robust way, integrate the search and save functionality with the RecipeFinder project, allow for more categorization, tagging, and note taking on individual recipes.

RecipeFinder

RecipeFinder is a personal recipe management tool that I created as the solo project for the 'Responsive Design' module of the Scrimba Front End Developer Career Path. While the prompt was for a learning journal or a hike finder, I built a recipe management tool because it was something I thought I'd use and be more likely to keep working on. This was the first project that I used CSS Grid.

Next steps: Connect search experience to recipe search API used in CookList project, store saved recipes in a more robust way, add more fields and make most or all fields editable, add concept of users with log in/sign up, refactor as React app, etc.

Color Scheme Generator

This color scheme generator app was created as the solo project for the 'Working with APIs' module of the Scrimba Front End Developer Career Path. The goal was to use a color scheme generator API to build an app that would take various inputs and generate appropriate color schemes accordingly. This was my first project with APIs since college and my first introduction to async/await. Design and functionality requirements are from Scrimba.

Next steps: Incorporate accessibility check API and add more customization within generated palettes.
